The Regata Storica opens with a historical parade, which re-enacts the welcome reserved in 1489 for Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, when she denounced the throne on the island in favor of Venice. The regatta is in typical sixteenth-century style, lead by "Serenissima", the amazing boat that represents the Republic of Venice and manned by 18 oarsmen with a helmsman. This boat is followed by about ten multi-colored boats with gondoliers in typical costume who transport the Duke, Duchess Caterina Corsaro and all other important people from the ancient Venice government.
