Festa della Sensa or the Day of Ascension Festival
Every year Venice attracts millions of visitors with world-renowned events. Among these stand out the Festa Della Sensa, which more than any other encounter revives the thousand year-old history of the Serenissima, its intimate relationship with the Sea and with the rowing of the Voga alla Veneta. The Festa della Sensa (Day of the Ascension) was a holiday of the Venice Republic which celebrated Christ's Ascension ("Sensa" in Venetian dialect).
These days there is a parade along the waters of San Marco al Lido made up of traditional rowboats, the leading one being the Serenissima, the boat which carries the Mayor and other city officials. Still today a symbolic ring is launched into the water. You can see the ceremony even from the Laguna del Lido, just a 5-minute walk from the hotel.
